Using A “Bosu Ball”
The Bosu Ball is a unique piece of workout equipment, that allows most people to use with great ease at home. It is indeed, a rather small piece of equipment which is used in most fitness clubs, but due to its size, has become quite popular to use at home.
The Bosu Ball gives you one round flat surface that acts as a support for a rounded ball the shape of a half circle. The “Ball” is on the top of the flat surface and when put on the ground, it offers an unstable surface making a great variety of workouts more challenging. Also people in really good condition may even turn the ball over and stand on the flat surface, making the ball even more unstable for a greater challenge.
One of the most basic ways to use the Bosu Ball is to stand on top of it with just one or both of your feet and perform either stability or strength building workouts. You do the same movements for the workout, but since your body is off balance, you must now tighten your muscles to keep control of your body.
One such easy move is to stand on top of the ball with both of your feet as you slowly raise one foot right behind you while you keep you balance with the other foot. You may want to start this exercise by just lifting one leg to the back slowly to practice keeping your balance, but you want to work up to raising your opposite arm out in front of you the same time your leg goes back, leaning forward into the movement. You will then return to the upright position and switch legs.
A different option is to get in a wide-legged squat position with one of your feet on top of the ball and the other flat on the ground. Bend down doing deep squats ten times, the switch feet on the ball and repeat. The leg that is on the ball will be worked hard as it struggles to stay stable during the squat.
Other people will also do strength building workouts by standing on or partly on the ball. You can do bicep curls and other dumbbell workouts while tightening muscles throughout the body to maintain your balance all the way through the workout.
The Bosu Ball product line continues to grow and now you can even purchase smaller weighted balls which can be held in your hand while you do stretches and balance moves on your Bosu. There are also videos out there designed specifically for the use with the Bosu Ball. It is a great purchase for anyone who wants to try it but isn’t quite sure how to use it correctly.
On a final note, consider using a Bosu Ball to add some movement and extra calorie burning into your day. Stand on it and balance while washing the dishes, watching television, or folding the laundry. The tightening and balancing action will help increase muscle definition and keep you more alert throughout the day.
