You’re muscles don’t know where the resistance is coming from, only that some opposing force is present. It’s not the type of resistance, it’s the manner in how it’s executed.

Here’s more information on resistance training and how that works. Different methods will yield different results.

You can get good results from either of these training methods if you use them properly. Your muscles care about the work they are doing (work = force x distance). The work done is the energy required to move something around. Your body doesn’t care if the work is caused by stretching a rubber band, pulling weights around a nautilus shaped cam or moving a bar with metal plates on the end – work is work.

Having said that each training method has its own advantages. Free weights force you to work harder than a ‘machine’ because it takes effort to maintain the proper form. Resistance machines force you into a specific positions intended to guarantee go form – which is good for beginning weight lifters. So a lot depends on you. Also ‘machines’ are safer to use at home. If you doing free weights at home, it can be a bit dicey to really push yourself without a spotter.

If you are working out at home and/or you don’t have a lot of weight lifting experience I’d go with a resistance ‘machine’. If you know what you are doing and are going to be working out in a gym where you can have a spotter for heavier weights free weights are great.
