Resistance Training – It Doesn’t Have to Mean Pumping Iron

People are getting more and more aware that resistance training is key to losing fat and getting a lean, toned body. That being said, it is still an uphill battle to teach people of the benefits of this type of training. For years now, people have been going to the gym and walking on a treadmill in hopes to lose weight. This rarely brings the results that most people seek, and soon quits bringing any noticeable results.

Why does this happen? The main reason is that your body burns more calories if you have more muscle mass. If you have two 180 lb men, one with 10% bodyfat and one with 20% bodyfat, the leaner man will burn more calories through exercise than the other one. The key to your body burning fat is muscle mass. Knowing this, you should incorporate some type of resistance training in to your workouts. If you don’t workout now and wish to lose weight, you should start off with resistance training and cardio. If you have limited time, just do the resistance training rather than the cardio.

I see overweight people everyday at the gym walking their lifes away on the treadmill. If you follow these people over a six month period, odds are if they are only doing the treadmill, they will see little results. Of course, there are many factors that contribute to weight loss, such as diet for one. But all things being equal, resistance training in the long run, will give you more benefits than cardio. In the beginning, any type of training will help, but soon these results will slow down. When they do, you need to train smarter and quit putting all of your efforts in to cardio.

One of the biggest challenges for people is the belief that this type of training only involves lifting weights in a gym. This isn’t true, there are many forms of resistance training and doing simple bodyweight exercises are a great way to help you lose fat and gain some muscle mass. By doing bodyweight exercises, you don’t even need to leave your house if you don’t want to. Another belief is that if you do lift weights, you will soon get big and bulky and look like a steroid popping bodybuilder. This definitely won’t happen! It takes years and years of training to gain that much muscle. If it was easy to get big, there wouldn’t be as much steroid use in the bodybuilding world as there seems to be.

I know that I will get some flack from the cardio lovers out there. That’s fine, I am not against cardio, I just think that it is only a piece to the puzzle and not the entire puzzle. Another reason that people like to walk on the treadmill is because it is easy to do. We have been walking our entire lives, there really is no learning process. The correct way to do resistance training; including the different types of exercises, correct form, how many reps and sets, how often to train, etc., are all things that can be confusing to someone inexperienced.

Don’t let this scare you away from it. It is not as difficult as it seems and there really is no perfect way to train. You will try different things and see how your body reacts to them. Keep what works and throw away what doesn’t. Soon you will know what works best for you and you can design your own workouts. As a start, you can do a few bodyweight circuits including pushups, bodyweight squats, pullups or chins, and a few others three times a week.
