Resistance Training for Weight Loss & Toning

Question:

For weight loss/toning with resistance training: More reps, less weight or more weight less reps?

I’m trying to lose weight and tone, not bulk up. When I do resistance work – should I do more reps at less weight or more weight less reps? Right now, for abs and legs and back I do 50 lbs and usually 30-100 reps depending on the time i allotted to work out (10-30 lbs for arm, chest, and shoulder work from 10-30 reps).

Oh, and if anybody knows what mets and wats are, those are information settings on the eliptical I work out on and I’m not sure what they mean.

Thanks!

Get yourself a set of resistance bands like the ones shown above. You’ll be able to build lean muscle all over your body, unlike weights. That muscle will burn fat.

Get the hook-up here for free workouts with the bands. You’ll find all kinds of cool workout shows for building muscle, toning, cardio, core strengthening and more. Plus, the bands travel well in a bag or back pack. You can take them anywhere.

…totally gree with Mike J. While lifting weights you burn only 300 cals, but you burn 700 in addition while you are resting. You should choose weight that allows you to lift only 6-7 reps, 5 in 5-6 series. You will bulk up for sure if you eat more that you burn!
Edit: and I agree with rstamb7 as well…

I have worked as a trainer for a while, and I find it funny that almost every woman I train tells me she doesn’t want to bulk up. She only wants to get lean, she says.

The only way for you to bulk up is if you really wanted to and really tried. You aren’t going to turn into a giant bodybuilder physique unless you are really trying, plus if you have the genetics.
Lifting weights will help your body burn calories, thus lose weight by burning your excess stores of fat. Especially cardio exercise will not make you bulky.

In other words, you can stop worrying about it. You aren’t going to get big. If you do, it’s all in your mind.

If you want to be fit, cardiovascularly, cardio is your bag. If you want to lose weight and gain tone and strength, start resistance training.
