  • Thanks @kestrelk8 for that most excellent overview.

I think the single most effective type of workout equipment for hitting all the muscles groups are resistance bands like the ones shown above. Sure, weights have their place, but unless you have machines with weight stacks and tons of attachments like those multi-use home gym systems, you can’t work each muscle group.

The door anchor alone that comes with the Bodylastics resistance bands is worth its weight in gold because it allows you to perform exercises at multiple levels and angles.

most resistance training exercises hit more than one muscle at a time so you don’t have to worry about hitting every single one individually. but here’s the break down:

    shoulders:
    anterior deltoid
    posterior deltiod
    lateral deltoid
    upper trapezius
    arms:
    triceps
    biceps
    brachialis

    back:
    mid and lower trapezius
    rhomboids
    latissimus dorsi
    teres major
    erector spinae

    chest:
    pectoralis major and minor
(but anterior deltoid and triceps are also included here)

    abs:
    rectus abdominus
    external obliques
    internal obliques
    transverse abdominus

    from the hips down:
    quadriceps
    hamstrings
    gastrocnemius (calf muscles)
    gluteus medius
    gluteus maximus
    adductors
