Weight lifting is resistance training. Resistance training is any type of training that requires the muscles to push and pull under heavier than normal resistance. Weight training is the most common and effective way but other types can use resistance bands, cable machines etc

When I think of "toning" I think of exercises that people do when they want smooth, sleek definition. If you want to bulk up your abs, I would do weight-bearing exercises with high loads and fewer reps.

You might want to try:
- The Roman Chair, with ankle weights (There are so many varieties for this one)
- Any ab weight machine, using high weights and fewer reps
- On freeweight back extension machines, prop yourself up on your side and do oblique crunches while hugging a free weight close to your chest

If it hurts, stop, and readjust your load. And it doesn't hurt to hire a trainer for one session too.

Make sure that you're getting plenty of protein right after your work out too, nothing to huge though. That will help rebuild your muscles. If you wait too long after your workout to replenish your protein supply, your body will start to "canibalize" the muscles you just built up to replenish the nutrients you just lost during the work out. I would suggest a quick protien shake, bar, or light meal with protein within 45 minutes of completing your workout.

Good luck!

JUST SO YOU KNOW, ALL EXERCISES BUILD THE ABS, HOWEVER THERE ARE NO EXERCISES THAT TONE THEM, TONE IS OBTAINED BY CONTROLLING YOUR DIET, NOT EXERCISE, EXERCISE ONLY BUILDS THEM, IF YOU WANT YOUR ABS TO SHOW, YOU HAVE TO EAT LESS CALORIES THAN YOU BURN, A CALORIE DEFECIT DIET, CARDIO WILL HELP BURN CALORIES TOO.

you better believe it! i used resistance bands to do rotator cuff exersices after i injured my left shoulder lifting. the resistance bands help isolate the smaller muscles that free weights dont (if you exercse slowly). well besides the resistance bands taking away the pain and me being able to lift again i felt my tri-cepts and shoulders alittle stiffer and rounder after 3 weeks of therapeaudic exercises.

If you don't want to lose your muscle mass you need LOTS of protein. Supplement with 100% whey protein. AS SOON as you get out of bed in the morning, head to the kitchen and make yourself a protein shake. You just got done sleeping all night and your muscles are starving, so feed them. Supplement after your workouts, too.

Long, you are only restricted if you have crappy bands with the handles already attached.

@bakebossno1, the bands won't lose their value if you get the kind with clips on the end that allow you to adjust/increase the tension.

To both of you, check out Bodylastics resistance bands.

Yes, Since they are low impact they are better for your joints and things. I love using them but you are restricted to only doing certain workouts.

If you are wanting to gain, you will have to feed your muscles which means you have to eat. If you are serious, you need to run cycles which means you alternate cutting and gaining. In a gain cycle, you eat more and continue cardio but with less intensity. Your food can be a little fattier than while cutting. When cutting, you increase your cardio intensity, cut your carb and fat intake, and don't eat carbs after 3:00 PM.

you HAVE to give your muscles time to rest - muscles dont grow while you workout the grow after you workout. When you workout you make little microscopic tears in your muscles and these tears rebuild over time stronger than before, you if you workout the same muscle too soon they wont have time to heal you you will tear into whats already torn and you wont make any progress, this is called "over-training"
if youre working out to get toned then do high reps and a lower resistance, in general, as long as you feel a strong burn in the muscle youre working then youre probably doing it right
the best way to rest your muscles and still keep a consistent workout schedule is to work a different muscle group every workout. for example: monday - legs, tuesday - arms and shoulders, wednesday - abs and back, thursday - maybe legs again or chest, whatever makes you happy
also if youre looking to recover from workouts faster that way you dont have to worry about soreness as much, overtraining, and to get toned a little faster then i suggest taking a protein. Personally i take cytogainer but I lift to get big and strong, bodybuilding.com has a world of protein and countless forums that discuss everything im saying and then some, good luck
