Changing Your Workout Routine Regularly for Fast Results

By Kevin Korver

How often do you change up your exercise routine? As a beginner just starting to workout, this isn’t really an issue. Resistance training is a very new thing for the body, so you see results quickly. What happens though, is after the beginner phase is over, most people start to realize that results are not happening as rapidly as before. This is because your body has adapted to your workout routine.

Changing up your exercise routines is a necessity if you wish to see continual results. How often do you have to switch things up? Most experts agree that you should be changing up your exercise routine every 2 months.

So how quickly does your body adapt? Recall the day after trying out a new sport or exercise. Remember how sore you were the next day? Then recall how you felt the next few times after doing the same sport/workout. Most likely, your body wasn’t nearly as sore as the first time. This is how fast your body can adapt to new exercises.

For cardiovascular activities, your body adapts by becoming more energy efficient. This means if you do the same cardio activity, your body will use less and less energy, meaning you will burn less calories doing the same activity. This is a great thing if you are an athlete, but quite the opposite if you’re trying to lose weight.

For resistance training, your body adapts by getting stronger. But if you are doing the same weightlifting routine, with the same resistance, same reps, week in and week out, your body will get strong enough for that amount of resistance, and no more. You will plateau within 2 months.

In conclusion, I hope you realize the importance of changing up your workout routine. The human body is an amazing system which is extremely adaptive to change. So next time you feel like you’ve hit a plateau, change things up! You will see dramatic improvements in your body.
