Alternative To Weight Lifting: Use Resistance Bands
Q: I am interested in using resistance bands instead of weights in my workouts. I’ve seen the bowflex commercials and what not but I would love to hear from real people who use resistance bands. I’m looking to elongate my muscles and physique by using the bands and doing bodyfow ( a form of yoga). I also plan to start Thai boxing so I would like to have a lean, yet powerful body that is flexible and can move with ease and grace. Weights are ok, but I feel heavy and sluggish after workouts and I want to feel light and fast. I’ve done some research and I’ve heard great things but I would love to hear some comments from users. I would actually like to alleviate weight altogether. Although there are some exercises I like that build testosterone, if I can find ways to do that with resistance bands, so long weights. Any advice would be appreciated.

100 pounds of resistance is 100 pounds of resistance whether it comes from iron weights, fiberglass rods, rubberized bands, springs, or any other source.
There may be advantages and disadvantages to the various methods of generating resistance (i.e. safety and nonlinearity for free weights, limited range of movement for some machines, etc.) but if you’re getting enough resistance to work your muscles hard enough, it doesn’t matter too much where that resistance comes from. I used to get great leg workouts running upstream in a river.
For your specific requirements (Thai boxing and yoga) you should probably talk to a qualified trainer. A competitive bodybuilder’s workout would probably not be the best thing for those activities. A trainer should be able to help you come up with a workout that meets your needs.
